Hiii,
The one blog I’ve put off doing for the longest time lol. Not because I didn’t want to, but rather I didn’t want to miss anything. It’s no lie that it’s really difficult trying to pack up your life into one 30kg bag, especially when your moving half way across the world. Although I will admit I done a great job of packing as much as I could and have to admit I’m quite pleased!
Vacuum Pack:
The invention of travelling dreams! Genuinely I wouldn’t have been able to bring half the amount of stuff I did when moving here, without the vacuum packs. Don’t underestimate how much they shrink things down! Jordan literally couldn’t believe it either when I done his bag lol. I bought a 6 pack from Amazon which I will link here & used 1 big and 1 small in each suitcase. Don’t worry about clothes being creased, they are going to he wrinkled from 26 hours in a suitcase anyways. Just a little bonus tip, pack a few air freshener bags into the vacuum packs before sealing them! Keeps everything smelling fresh when you open it, in your new home!
Packing List:
If you’ve read my previous packing blogs you’ll know my love for a good list or itinerary. I found it difficult making a clothes packing list for moving rather than a holiday. On this note, if you are moving to Australia please don’t be like me a bring lots of nice clothes… you never end up wearing them. I’ve been here 10 weeks and never work at least half of the nice clothes I brought. The style out here is more like activewear or denim with a T-shirt. A dress or two for nights out doesn’t hurt, but even at that most bars you’ll end up wearing denim and a nice top to! Also, bring a few hoodies and leggings. It does get chilly here in the autumn/winter most days are around 20-25°c, but don’t be fooled by this. The mornings and evenings are colddd. Like 6-12°C cold. Think these are the best tips I have for what to bring clothes wise!
Check Your Airline Details:
We flew with Emirates whole travelling to Australia and with basic economy the allowed 32kg across up to 10 bags. For me I brought 2 bags to complete the 32kg. I could have fit it all into 1 big case but I actually wanted to bring a duffel bag with me to use for the beach or smaller trips, so this worked perfectly for me. All airlines are different though, so please be sure to check before flying!
Shopping Bags:
Two great reasons to bring your reusable shopping bags: 1. You can use them for your food shops, obviously. 2. Wrap your liquids in these bags. I didn’t bring many toiletries other than makeup and skincare because I didn’t want to waste precious weight allowance on things I can buy here. However, my on our way to Disney my suncream burst in my suitcase. Luckily I had it inside a shopping bag, otherwise all my things would have been covered in suncream. Win/Win situation bringing your shopping bags if you ask me.
Things You Can’t Live Without:
I feel like it goes without saying but take a look at things you use everyday that you love. For me I have a Disney tumbler that I love using at home. I brought it. Yes it may seem silly for someone else. However, it brings me joy using it everyday & that’s why I brought it. My pastel markers. Another thing that is insignificant to others but I look forward to using them every night when filling in my journal. Maybe a few of your favourite snacks? My Daddy bought me some Percy Pigs before I left. I kept these until I started my new job and enjoyed a few that night because I was feeling a little homesick. Take a think about it and make a list on your phone as you realise these things that you use everyday that makes you happy. When your missing home a little, it’s these small things that help.
Things I Regret Not Packing:
Learn from my mistakes… I made plenty when packing to move to Australia.
1. Too many nice clothes and not enough activewear. I mentioned it above but I really can’t stress this enough. Plus the shopping out here is class, especially if you love capsule wardrobe styles.
2. Pj’s. I brought 2 pairs of short set pj’s and it was fine for the 5 weeks of summer we had! Then it started getting into the colder autumn evenings and mornings & it just made me miss my primark cosy jammies that bit more. Maybe not full on fleecy pj’s but definitely a set of long sleeves and full legs.
3. A small backpack or bumbag. I had a small backpack sitting on my desk ready to pack and I forgot it that morning going to the airport… ragged. Your probably thinking you won’t use it, but you will. I bought a Lululemon 1L bumbag & wear it everyday. You’ll need to carry your passport pretty much everywhere, because the don’t accept a drivers license for ID. Even if your not going to a bar you never know where you might end up and need it. Asides from your passport, a deodorant and spray to keep you smelling fresh in the hot and humid days of summer doesn’t go a miss either. Or if your at the beach it’s handy to throw your phone, keys, purse, passports, all into the one place and not have to worry about losing anything!
That’s pretty much everything I can think of that made a difference to packing up my life into 30kg! I hope this helps you packing up your life & as always feel free to message me on Instagram, I’m always up for a chat!
