Day in the Life | Living in Australia | Regional Work

Hiii,

I’m officially on day 10/88 of my regional work in Kalgoorlie, which enables me to apply for a second year visa to stay working in Australia… here’s the ins and outs of my day at the minute:

Super Pit- Kalgoorlie Boulder

4:30am alarm goes off to get up and ready for work. We are incredibly lucky to be staying in a beautiful hotel while we are away from Perth for work, which is paid for by our employer which is an extra bonus! Once we’ve got ourselves ready we pack our lunches into our bags and head downstairs for a coffee and brekkie. Again we are completely spoilt with having access to a full continental breakfast every morning which is also supplied by our employer! Usually well be finished up and off in the work van for 5:20am and at work in 10 minutes. We officially start work at 6am though, but its nice getting in a bit earlier to sign off our paper work before everyone comes in and gets busy!

6am-5:30pm is the official working day! My job title is a roller operator, which if you know me personally is a completely new line of work for me hahaha! Essentially what I do in a working day is drive back and forward on a plot of sandy clay and rock to compact it down, making it stable for construction. By all means it can be very boring and tedious rolling back and forth for 11 hours of the day, but nothing a good podcast or music can fix! I’m really enjoying The Diary of a CEO, Magic at Home, Ear Biscuits, Tea with Me and of course Call Her Daddy. Very mixed genres and conversations happening in all these podcasts for sure lol but it keeps it interesting for me hahaha!

6pm comes around and were getting ready for the gym! Since both myself and Jordan are driving all day we don’t get very many steps done so we are being mindful to look after our health and get at least 60 minutes of exercise everyday! It’s definitely tough after an 11 hour work day and awake from 4:30am but there’s no price on good health… I’m still breaking myself into strength training and being very careful to not hurt myself as my body still isn’t where it was prior to June last year. Regardless I want to get stronger and fitter so we work on it everyday!

7:30pm we’re home from the gym and washed, ready for some dinner… which again is amazingly catered for by our employer! I’m really enjoying the spag bol or the rump steak… yes I’m still in awe that we get all this for free while we’re working too hahaha!

8pm it’s bedtime! Never did I think in my adult life I would be going to bed at 8pm with the intention to be sleeping for 8:30-9pm lol. I struggle with fatigue with my body recovering, having a sedentary job definitely has helped to improve this but I still have to prioritise getting 8 hours sleep! We have this really lovely routine after dinner to jump into bed and watch an episode or two of the Big Bang Theory on the TV! I forgot how much I loved this show and how much joy it brings me, such an easy watch!

There you have it my day in the life of regional work as a roller driver in Kalgoorlie WA! Life is very different at the moment, I am so grateful to be here and equally proud of myself for trying so many new things! It’s actually boosted my self confidence something shocking seeing myself doing so many new things, proud of me! With all that being said I want to be very transparent, it’s not all easy either. I’ve cried from exhaustion, getting frustrated learning new skills, not being able to keep in contact with home as much as I’d like to and generally being away from Perth. But would I change it? Absolutely not. I am loving the whole experience, one day it will all be a memory.
